Science, Confidence, & Star Power with MilliporeSigma

February 11 marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day dedicated to celebrating trailblazers and smashing the "glass ceiling" in STEM. At Girls on the Run, we know that the confidence built on the track is the same confidence needed to lead in a laboratory.

That’s why we’re so proud to partner with MilliporeSigma. Their Women’s Leadership Employee Resource Group (ERG) doesn't just talk about the future of science—they actively invest in it. Through years of fundraising and corporate matching, they’ve helped ensure that local girls have the tools to lead, innovate, and dream big. We sat down with their team to discuss why empowering the next generation of women in science starts with building "star power" today.

Q: Can you share a brief overview of MilliporeSigma’s Women’s Leadership ERG and its goals—especially as they relate to supporting women and girls in STEM?

MilliporeSigma’s Women in Leadership ERG aims to empower women within the organization by promoting leadership, networking, and mentorship opportunities. It also focuses on raising awareness about gender diversity and specifically supports initiatives that encourage women and girls in STEM-related fields through partnerships and community outreach.

Q: The Women’s Leadership ERG has raised funds for Girls on the Run South Central Wisconsin for several years, with MilliporeSigma matching those gifts. What inspired the ERG to support Girls on the Run?

The Women in Leadership ERG was inspired to support Girls on the Run due to the organization’s mission of empowering young girls through physical activity and life skills development. Supporting GOTR reflects a commitment to inspiring the next generation of female leaders in both STEM-related fields and beyond.

Q: How does Girls on the Run’s focus on confidence, leadership, and physical activity connect with your vision for empowering the next generation of women in science and leadership?

Girls on the Run’s focus on confidence, leadership, and physical activity aligns closely with the vision of empowering the next generation of women in science and leadership by fostering essential skills that are critical for success. Building confidence helps girls believe in their abilities and pursue opportunities in traditionally male-dominated fields like STEM. Leadership skills cultivated through teamwork and goal-setting prepare them to take on roles in their future careers. Additionally, the emphasis on physical activity promotes overall well-being, resilience, and a proactive mindset, all of which are important traits for aspiring leaders in any discipline. This holistic approach creates a strong foundation for young women to thrive in science and leadership roles.

Q: February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Why is this day meaningful to MilliporeSigma and to members of the Women’s Leadership ERG?

International Day of Women and Girls in Science, is meaningful to MilliporeSigma and members of the Women’s Leadership ERG as it highlights the importance of gender equality in the scientific community. This day serves as a platform to promote the contributions of women and girls in STEM fields, raising awareness about the challenges they face and the need for increased representation. For MilliporeSigma, it reinforces our commitment to empowering women in science, fostering mentorship, and inspiring the next generation of female leaders. Celebrating this day aligns with our goals of advocating for diversity and inclusion, ultimately contributing to a more equitable future in science and leadership.

Q: From your perspective, why is it important to introduce girls—at a young age—to strong role models in science, leadership, and problem-solving fields?

Introducing girls to strong role models in science, leadership, and problem-solving fields is essential for challenging stereotypes and inspiring confidence. Early exposure to diverse role models helps girls envision themselves in these roles, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment. This encouragement not only promotes interest in STEM and leadership but also cultivates critical skills necessary for future success.

Q: What impact do you hope your support of Girls on the Run has on girls as they grow—whether they ultimately pursue STEM careers or other paths?

The support of Girls on the Run aims to empower girls with confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of community, regardless of whether they pursue STEM careers or other paths. By fostering resilience and a proactive mindset, we hope to equip them with the tools to tackle challenges and pursue their passions. Ultimately, the goal is to inspire them to become confident leaders and change-makers in any field they choose, contributing positively to society and breaking down barriers for future generations.

Q: Is there a message you’d like to share with Girls on the Run participants about curiosity, confidence, or believing in their own potential?

To all Girls on the Run participants: Embrace your curiosity and never be afraid to ask questions or explore new ideas. Confidence comes from believing in yourself and your abilities, so trust that you have the potential to achieve great things. Remember, every step you take—whether on the track or in life—brings you closer to your goals. Keep pushing forward, stay curious, and believe in your unique potential to make a difference in the world!
