Healthy Inspirations: Sleep – The Secret Training Tool!

When young athletes think about improving their performance, they often focus on practice, conditioning, strength training, and nutrition.

However, one of the most powerful tools for success is frequently overlooked: sleep.

"Quality sleep is essential for physical recovery, mental sharpness, injury prevention, and overall success in many parts of life," said SSM Health Family Medicine Physician Dr. Mathew Herbst. "A lot happens in our bodies while we are at rest."

During sleep, the body repairs its tissues, restores energy, strengthens the immune system, and supports learning and memory. For young athletes, getting at least eight-plus hours of quality sleep each night can improve:

  • Reaction time, focus, and concentration

  • Learning and retention of new skills and techniques

  • Motivation and emotional regulation

  • Physical recovery after training and competition

  • And, most importantly, performance in school

“Sleep is essential to maintaining good grades, keeping up with schoolwork, and focusing while in class,” Dr. Herbst said.  "Athletes who are tired may miss opportunities in the classroom, make poor strategic decisions when playing their sport, perform inconsistently, or enjoy their sport less than they should."

Good sleep does not happen by accident. It requires consistency and intentional habits. Recommendations for better sleep include:

  • Maintaining a consistent bedtime and wake-up schedule, even on weekends

  • Following a relaxing bedtime routine, including turning off electronic devices well before bedtime

  • Keeping the bedroom dark, cool, and quiet

  • Making sleep a family priority

Anyone with questions or concerns about their sleep health should talk with their primary care provider or pediatrician. To find a provider near you, visit: https://www.getcare.ssmhealth.com/find-a-doctor?location=Madison%2C+WI%2C+USA
